Rome
Italy's capital and first city of the Lazio region emerges on the banks of the river Tiber and is an art city boasting many important monuments, evidence from the Roman Empire and the Papal history. The cultural and artistic destinations of the city are numerous and Rome's hotels and inns can suggest different itineraries for tourists to explore this city of art on foot or by public transport, particularly using the excellent underground rail service stopping at the essential locations.
Rome, the antique capital of the Roman Empire safeguards important archaeological excavations: the Via dei Fori Imperiali (Imperial Forums Avenue) features Constantine's Arch and Flavian's Amphitheatre, more known as the Coliseum. Rome is also crossed by the old roads of the Empire like Via Flaminia, Via Appia, Via Aurelia, Via Salaria and Via Cassia which kept their old structure.
Rome also hosts the seat of the City of the Vatican, the Papal residence. On the striking Piazza San Pietro (Saint Peter's Square) you can find the Basilica di San Pietro (Saint Peter's Cathedral), Rome's most important church built in Renaissance style with an ample façade and important artistic works inside among which the "Pietà" by Michelangelo. The City of the Vatican also hosts the Vatican Museums.
Rome boasts numerous churches of different styles and historical eras, among which are the San Giovanni in Laterano Church, Santa Maria Maggiore Church, San Paolo Fuori le Mura Church and important historical palaces: Palazzo Farnese, Palazzo Venezia, Palazzo del Quirinale, the official residence of the President of the Republic, la Farnesina, antique Renaissance city, Villa Madama, Villa Doria Pamphili, as well as the Villa Borghese.
Rome's squares are numerous and evocative like St. Peter's Square dominated by the ample colonnade by Bernini, Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza del Popolo, apart from the characteristic and evocative Piazza del Campo dei Fiori, where there are often stalls.
Rome's museums are also cultural destinations of great interest with the Capitol Museum, Borghese Gallery, Antique Art Gallery and the Modern Art Gallery. Among the important monuments to visit in Rome are also the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's superb fresco of "The Last Judgement", the Trevi Fountain and the Caracallà Thermal Baths where shows and lyric operas are often performed
Rome's Enogastronomy
Rome's gastronomy is simple with dishes known in the whole of Italy made from fresh pasta: spaghetti with garlic and oil, bucatini all'amatriciana are classic first courses, while tripe, lamb, beef roast and, most of all, the classic saltimbocca alla romana are second courses known in the whole of Italy. Rome's restaurants, eateries, agrotourism businesses, hotels and inns offer tourist menus combining local recipes with typical wines of the area.
The most important wines of the region are those of the Castelli Romani (Roman Castles) for which the Castelli Romani Wine Route and Velletri are the most well-known wines.
